About Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana
Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) is a government-backed savings scheme launched under the "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" initiative. It offers one of the highest interest rates among small savings schemes and is specifically designed for the girl child.
Key Features
The account can be opened for a girl child below 10 years of age. Minimum annual deposit is ₹250 and maximum is ₹1,50,000. Deposits must be made for 15 years, and the account matures when the girl turns 21.
Tax Benefits
SSY enjoys EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) tax status. Deposits qualify for deduction under Section 80C, interest earned is tax-free, and the maturity amount is also tax-free.
Partial Withdrawal
After the girl turns 18, up to 50% of the balance can be withdrawn for higher education purposes. The remaining amount continues to earn interest until maturity.
