Travel Card Tips
Always pay in local currency
When given the choice at a terminal or ATM, always choose to pay in the local currency. Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) adds a 3%–7% markup.
Notify your bank before traveling
Set a travel notice to prevent your card from being blocked for suspicious international activity.
Carry a backup card
Bring at least two cards from different networks (Visa + Mastercard) in case one is not accepted or gets blocked.
Check ATM withdrawal limits
Many no-fee cards have monthly free ATM withdrawal limits. Plan larger, less frequent withdrawals to stay within limits.
Avoid airport currency exchange
Airport exchange counters charge 5%–15% markup. Use your no-fee card at local ATMs instead.
Watch for weekend surcharges
Services like Revolut add a 1% weekend markup since forex markets are closed. Make conversions on weekdays.
