Tips to Save on ATM Fees

Always decline Dynamic Currency Conversion

When an ATM offers to convert to your home currency, always say NO and choose the local currency. DCC markups range from 3% to 7%.

Use a no-foreign-fee debit card

Cards like Charles Schwab, Wise, or Revolut reimburse ATM fees and have zero forex markup, saving you 3–5% on every withdrawal.

Withdraw larger amounts less often

Most ATM fees are flat per transaction. Withdrawing $300 once costs less in fees than withdrawing $100 three times.

Use bank-attached ATMs

ATMs inside or attached to bank branches are safer and less likely to have skimming devices than standalone ATMs.

Check your daily withdrawal limit

Foreign ATMs often have per-transaction limits that are lower than your card limit. Plan accordingly.

Carry backup payment methods

Do not rely solely on ATM cash. Carry a credit card and a second debit card in case your primary card is blocked or eaten.

Disclaimer

ATM fees and withdrawal limits listed are approximate and subject to change. Fees may vary by bank, ATM operator, card issuer, and account type. Your home bank may charge additional fees on top of the local ATM operator fee. Always check with your bank for the most current fee schedule.
